So, from the 1st of October onwards, all the pharmacies in UK will introduce a new advance service alongside with the current MUR (Medicines use review), it’s called NEW medicines service.
Any patients who have been prescribed a new medicine in the 4 targeted groups – Hypertension, diabetes, anticoagulants, and asthma/copd, will be given a chance to take part in our free service.
There are 3 steps in this service, the 1st being the engagement step, followed by 2 follow ups, 14 days apart. The purpose of this service is to ensure safety and patient compliance with their medication, to follow up with their progress, and to make sure any side effects or adverse reactions are reported and sorted, so that they can have a maximal benefit from their medications. The other aim is to reduce the NHS expenses by reducing the number of hospital admissions related to adverse drug reactions.
Through this new service, let’s hope pharmacists are able to proof to other healthcare professionals that we do play a huge role in adding value to our patient’s healthcare, in the hopes that NHS will stop cutting budgets from us.
